Sailor Moon

It’s a cartoon bug, no it’s a girl, what is that? It’s Sailor Moon. While many people admire this cartoon character (almost) as much as Hello Kitty, this is a character that just as many people despise. With the largest eyes imaginable and a sailor type of uniform, this is a character that goes around saving the world, just like so many other cartoon characters in the television and comic world.

Big Eyes, Scary Face

Yes, when you actually stop to look at Sailor Moon, she’s a little creepy. Her eyes are as big as saucers and she is shaped like a Barbie doll. Her head looks like it could topple her body and she’s not all that graceful when she moves. While this is just a cartoon, there are some who might argue that Sailor Moon is just soft core porn, disguised as a children’s comic that portrays the never ending battle of good versus evil.

The Appeal of Anime

But anime and manga continue to be popular with the kids these days. Why? Most of the time, teens will tell you that it’s not that it’s realistic, but that it is a form of escapism. This is a cartoon that allows the viewer to feel as though they are watching a good person take down evil, again and again. Sailor Moon, along with others in the show are able to defeat all sorts of creatures, even when all hope seems to be lost.

The show characters include:

  • Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon
  • Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury
  • Rei Hino/Sailor Mars
  • Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter
  • Minako Aino/Sailor Venus
  • Chibiusa/Sailor Mini Moon
  • Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Mask
  • Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto
  • Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune
  • Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus
  • Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn

Why Sailor Moon is So Popular

In the Sailor Moon cartoons, there are five different story arcs that people can follow:

  • The Dark Kingdom arc (Sailor Moon)
  • The Black Moon arc (Sailor Moon R)
  • The Mugen/Infinity arc (Sailor Moon S)
  • The Dream arc (Sailor Moon SuperS)
  • The Stars arc (Sailor Moon Sailor Stars)

Whether you like the cartoon or not, there’s something to be said for this run lasting over five years and through eighteen volumes of story. This is a cartoon that is also a comic book and it can be found in movies and other fan sites.

No matter if you think Sailor Moon’s eyes are too big or her voice is too small, this character isn’t going to fade into the sunset that quickly.
